River Boat Safari down the Walawe River
Guests are escorted to the Tuk-Tuk for a short charming ride from the resort to the mangrove-filled Walawe River where their boat will be ready to carry them down the stream. The river is brimming with wildlife and during the golden hour of sunset, guests can watch tropical birds, bats, and the rare white-bellied eagles settle into their sleeping spots for the night on the trees bordering the river. During this journey, the guests can also expect to see langur monkeys swinging through the trees alongside the boat, peacocks dancing on the banks, thirsty buffalos and local fishermen who can teach you so much about the local flora and fauna that you won’t need the pocket guidebook. It is a scene right out of Disney’s Jungle Book.
Whale Watching from the Dondra Harbour
Another one to tick off the bucket list, Dondra Canyon is the perfect place in the world to see blue whales. They boast of having the best sightings of the largest blue whale gatherings that come to feed on blooms of plankton. Whale-watching at Dondra is truly a majestic once-in-a-lifetime experience. Blue whale sightings are most common in the east of the canyon in October-November and on the west of it in March-May. Blue whales aren’t all, you’ll also see Bryde´s whales, Sperm whales, Fin whales and Killer whales. Did you think that was all? Whale it isn’t, you’ll also see Common dolphins, Bottlenose dolphins, Spinner dolphins, Risso’s dolphins and Striped dolphins. Dondra Harbour is dophinately a must-do on this list!
Sunset at Godawaya
One can never get enough of sunsets; the magic never ceases. Guests kick-start the relaxing evening with a leisurely stroll on the beach or a bike ride along the resort’s dramatic coastline chasing the waves, passing through a quaint local fishermen’s village and Buddhist temple, and concluding with a scenic hike through some beautifully abstract rock formations to Godawaya. Guests can then watch the sun set over the great Indian Ocean. Shangri-La then comes in to swoop the guests off their feet with an indulgent sunset picnic that is served as part of the hotel’s luxurious Dine by Design program.
Visit the Virgin White Tea Factory
The Handunugoda Tea Estate, a coveted tea plantation known for its desirable proximity to the sea, is also fondly called the Virgin White Tea Factory and produces a white tea completely untouched by human hands. Guests have the opportunity to learn the process of tea plucking and dive into the history of Virgin White Tea. Additionally, guests of Shangri-La’s Hambantota Golf Resort & Spa are also offered an exclusive invitation to meet the owner of the plantation who is kind enough to host a private tour of a property and take the guests around personally for a unique insight on tea making and few family anecdotes, complete with an intimate warm evening of sipping tea at his house.
