There is America’s Cup, then there is America’s Cup Challenger Playoffs Cup. The winner’s trophy (Auld Mug) of America’s Cup is 166 years old and come with a lot of history, and a Deed of Gift from Royal Yacht Squadron. America’s Cup Challenger race itself is quite new, which started in 1983. As the race became popular and a number of competitors grew, it needed a preliminary round to pick a challenger to the defender. Louis Vuitton’s association with America’s Cup started with the inaugural Challenger series in 1983, when the brand became the sponsor for the Louis Vuitton Challenger series.

A few days ago Louis Vuitton unveiled a new trophy and a matching trunk for the Louis Vuitton Challenger Playoffs. Made from10kg of sterling silver, the trophy measures 70 cm tall. Shaped like a clash of passing sails, it comes highly polished and satin-finished. Another highlight is the distinct Gaston “V” mark – a symbol adopted by Gaston Vuitton in 1930s to highlight brand’s values Volez, Voguez,Voyagez – means Fly, Sail, Travel.

The new trophy will be accompanied by a special monogram trunk, handcrafted in France by three craftsmen who spent over 400 hours working on it. Gaston “V” also makes an appearance in red on the front. Interiors feature blue microfiber lining and a red “V”.

This year’s Challenge race held in Bermuda is taking place from Sunday, June 4 through Monday, June 12. There are five teams competing in the 11th edition of Louis Vuitton Cup – Land Rover BAR, Emirates Team New Zealand, Artemis Racing, SoftBank Team Japan and Groupama Team France.The winner will face the current America’s Cup holder Oracle Team USA, winner of the 34th edition. The winner will be awarded the Louis Vuitton Cup on June 11th or 12th on the Great Sound in Bermuda.
