Dubai has welcomed the year 2014 like no other, with a world record display of fireworks. Set off from more 400 different locations along 60 miles of coastline was an estimated 500,000 pyrotechnics, beating the previous record. The previous owner of the record, neighboring Kuwait set the record with 77,282 in November 2012 to celebrate its golden anniversary. That record went up in smoke in Dubai’s first minute of fireworks.
According to Guinness World Records “The spectacle’s final salvo of fireworks created an artificial ‘sunrise’ along the seafront, with the highest fireworks reaching more than one kilometer in height.” The six-minute display was attended by thousands of Dubai residents and visiting tourists celebrating the arrival of New Year. The display was live-streamed on YouTube, as well as on Dubai Media’s website.
IMG Artists, the same company that organized the previous grand fireworks display with 250,000 pyrotechnics in Dubai for the opening of Atlantis Hotel in 2008 has done the honors this time too. Company’s President Jerry Inzerrilo told Wall Street Journal “When we did 250,000 in 2008 for the opening of Atlantis and the Palm Island, there were people who said that would never be able to be done again. But Dubai has always exercised great vision and great judgment.”
Fireworks were set up on all of Dubai’s well-known landmarks that included the man-made island Palm Jumeirah and the World.
