In the UK the Fat Tuesday is now called the Pancake Day, just so you know in New Orleans it’s still the Mardi Gras Day. To celebrate this year’s Fat Tuesday in the most decadent way as possible, Manchester’s Radisson Blu Edwardian hotel’s Opus restaurant has come up with the most expensive pancake ever with a price tag £800 or about $1,350 attached to it. If you go to a pancake house like IHOP, we know the list of toppings usually come with it – syrup, fruits, jam, butter, cheese and even more fruit. For this special pancake it’s all pricey seafood toppings such as Beluga caviar, Scottish lobster, Hulle Verge truffles and Scottish mussels and langoustines. The cherry on this topping is the dollop of Dom Pérignon Rosé hollandaise sauce it served with. No special ingredients for the pancake base, it’s still butter, sugar and milk.

The idea of the priciest pancake occurred to restaurant’s head chef Matthew Downes as a result of a brainstorming session during his free time to create a “posh pancake.” For all the talk and the pricey tag it takes just 20 minutes for Downes to send it from pancake pan to diner’s table. One difference from the traditional flat pancake is, the posh seafood pancake is served as a thick triangular wedge with a bright pink topping.

Speaking about his expensive creation Downes said to UK’s Daily Mail “We thought of doing a posh pancake because we knew Pancake Day was coming up and we thought we could make something a bit special out of it. We used only the finest ingredients to give it that extra-wow factor. I’m really proud of what we’ve created, the taste certainly lives up to the price tag. As you know none of these ingredients are cheap and it makes you a very proud chef to be able to work them.”

He also added “All we wanted to do was make the finest pancake you could ever taste and it’s turned into the world’s most expensive. Although it can be a little nerve wracking in the kitchen as you certainly don’t want to get an order like this wrong.”

Posh pancakes are not included on the Opus’s regular menu, but they are ready to take orders from patrons with fat wallets.
