When grape skins metamorphose into ice buckets, you know the world has changed. Champagne house Perrier-Jouët teamed-up with San Francisco-based architect Andrew Kudless to design a couple of exclusives for Design Miami 2016. The four-piece collection includes an installation named the Strand Garden, oak-topped benches, a glowing glass table and the aforementioned Limited Edition Perrier-Jouët Marc Metamorphosis Ice Bucket.
This is the first time Perrier-Jouët has commissioned a US designer for Design Miami, they exclusively worked with Europeans for previous editions. “I was interested in the way that strands, fibers, branches and vines were applied across every aspect of Art Nouveau, from paintings to architecture. The curving strand motif evokes nature and movement over time. I wanted to look at four of Perrier-Jouët’s emblematic materials – wood, chalk, glass and grapes – and see how I could create strands out of each one,” said Kudless.
The Strand Garden in all its orange glow is an installation of three oak veneer screens with curving 8′ strands – evoking tree trunks or vines. Strands are programmed to light up within to gently swell and fade. When light is dull they appear solid, but when the light starts to strengthen strands reveal their hollow form.
The other three items are located inside the Strand Garden. The glowing white table in the center, which is 3-D printed from bio-plastic. Illuminated within, each filament of this sparkles to remind the radiant clarity and vibrant bubbles of Perrier-Jouët’s distinctive wines.
The next item, the benches feature robotically-milled oak tops that mimic Perrier-Jouët’s riddling racks and wine presses. Their concrete made legs are specially treated to look like the famous chalk walls of Perrier-Jouët’s cellars.
The final item is the $5,000 Limited Edition Perrier-Jouët Marc Metamorphosis Ice Bucket, which is not only made from ground Chardonnay skins, but 3-D printed. It is designed to highlight the organic relationship with champagne and as a tribute to freshness, subtlety and sophistication of Perrier-Jouët’s Belle Epoque cuvée.
