Aqua Shard London is hosting a whimsical afternoon tea party which is going to take you right back to your childhood fantasies – get ready to have a Mary Poppins themed high tea all the way until April 2019. Catch the flying nanny on the 31 st floor of London’s tallest building, The Shard.
The pastry chef has created a menu so true to the theme that you’ll almost believe him to be the author for catching the littlest details of the story and turning them into tea time treats! The Aqua Shard Mary Poppins Afternoon Tea menu starts off with traditional finger sandwiches; egg, ham, cheese and a brioche with crab and cucumber, accompanied by miniature crumpets (Mary Poppins’ favorite!) served warm with smoked salmon and cream cheese.
The Mary Poppins trademark ‘Carpet Bag’ packs a little surprise – freshly-baked plain and raisin scones alongside homemade plum and raspberry jams with a side of clotted cream. All the cakes are served on a custom-made tea stand with an umbrella on top and silver booted feet below. Each cake has a special connection to the novels; like the golden syrup tart baked in a tin, gingerbread from the Banks family cook Mrs. Correy. Or the cake where Mary Poppins’ iconic hat makes an appearance, with a black ‘Cherry Tree Lane’ mousse covered in dark chocolate, with an edible flower brim, and a black cherry on top. The culinary delights are served on crockery that uses Mary Shepard’s illustrations to add the final touch of magic to your afternoon tea.
And finally, onto the actual star on the table – the teas! The palette experts at Aqua Shard have curated a menu of special tea blends along with the character’s preferred choices. Mary’s tea includes Darjeeling and Ceylon, Keemun from China and rose petals while Bert’s tea includes Souchong from China, vanilla and cornflower from Sussex. La Grotta ice cream, a company founded by the granddaughter of PL Travers, who wrote Mary Poppins, will be there making lemonade floats for the children – now could it get any more real?
If the lemonade is not your cup of tea, don’t worry because adults get a few extra treats for living in the grown-up world. A special ‘medicine’ that’s very easy to swallow – homemade liqueurs of Rum Punch, Lime Cordial, and Strawberry that are served in potion bottles for those looking to drink some magic before returning to the reality. The Aqua Shard Mary Poppins afternoon tea starts at $65 and with the option with champagne starts at $85. You have a chance to dine in the fantasy world till April 2019 only at The Shard, London.
