A True ‘Arabian Night’ for the Senses
Mindy Yang, co-founder of the Min New York – a downtown fragrance shop- has yet again reinvented the fragrance shopping experience with her newly launched Perfumarie in SoHo.
Opened this November, Yang’s Perfumarie becomes reminiscent of an exotic stall in Aladdin’s Arabian market; as it offers a blind perfume shopping experience, only allowing customers to smell fragrances with no indication of their label or brand.
Yes, a visit to Yang’s Perfumarie does sound like an intoxicating, magic carpet ride. A thrilling treat for the inner child in every adult who has managed to hold on to their childhood flair for adventure. The best thing is, this exotic, avant-garde perfume store is located right in the heart of New York City in SoHo. Imagine visiting it over a weekend for a de-stressing experience, leaving all the cares of the adult world behind and closing your eyes and getting lost in a plethora of wonderful fragrances, because that is exactly how Yang has designed her boutique experience to be.
Installed along the back minimalist space of Yang’s store are 32 identical fragrance spouts. The spouts are labelled only by number. Underneath each spout is a small gray stone tagine containing a white paper swan soaked in the mystery perfume of the respective spout. The Perfumarie’s multi-sensory fragrance shopping experience starts here, when the customers start walking along this backspace and inhale the mystery perfumes in numerical order, one after the other. The scents begin with light, airy tones like lavender and citrus and then becomes stronger to the likes of cardamom and even cumin, some perfumes are known to even transcend natural odors.
Yang has made sure that the transcending perfumes in her store represent a variety of perfumes, Some ranging from designer perfumes that sell for $5 per milliliter and others 1.7 ounces for $20.
Once you figure out your 2 final favourite fragrances, you are invited to try them on, then make a final choice. Of this final choice, you get to leave home with a 5 ml sample. The sample vial will be numbered as the respective spout, not named. The identity of your final fragrance choice will be revealed at the month-end cocktail party at the Perfumarie or the corresponding online list of perfumes.
