Cate Blanchett’s “Blue Jasmine” Hermès Bag Worth $35K, Hollywood Can’t Afford It

No one can afford Hermès bags anymore, that includes Hollywood. They cost too much and costume budgets for the movies are getting smaller – soon it will BYOC. The camel colored Hermès Birkin bag Cate Blanchett’s character in Woody Allen movie “Blue Jasmine” carrying around, came from their costume designer Suzy Benzinger’s personal wardrobe.

Both Woody Allen and Cate Blanchett spoke to Harper’s Bazaar UK about the movie and the small costume budget. Allen agreed budget was too small. Added Blanchett “The Hermès bag I was carrying was worth more than her whole budget. And there I was, throwing it on the sidewalk again and again. I felt her blood pressure go up every time it hit the pavement.”

Costume design budget for the movie was limited to just $35,000, so Benzinger dove into her personal closet to get the bag. Then there is the other story, even if Benzinger had a bigger budget, they still would’ve used something different or end up borrowing from her anyway, because the Birkin bag has a year’s long waiting list. Blanchett had this to say “The waiting list for those bags is decades. You’re in wheelchairs before they arrive.”

Why in the world this movie so badly needed a real Birkin or this particular one? They could’ve used a dummy or just asked Hermès for a loaner Birkin.
