Why spend just 99 cents when you can spend $2,145 for the same? At least that seems to be the thinking behind French fashion brand Balenciaga when they designed the Arena Extra-Large Shopper Tote Bag. As you can see, it looks a lot like Ikea’s 99 cent Frakta shopping bag.
Just like Ikea’s famous blue bag, this luxury version also has all the wrinkles, a long strap, and short handles. Unlike the Ikea’s recyclable plastic Frakta bag, this is made from fancy stuff like glazed leather and comes with black interior lining, zip pocket, and key ring.
Ikea has no beef with Balenciaga stealing/copying their design. In fact, they are very happy and issued this statement “We are deeply flattered that the Balenciaga tote bag resembles the Ikea iconic sustainable blue bag for 99 cents. Nothing beats the versatility of a great big blue bag!”
Ikea didn’t stop with the statement. They have now taken it to a whole new level of trolling the fashion brand. On Ikea website and on social media they have this little nugget “How to identify an original Ikea Frakta bag.” Here is a list of things to do to identify “1) Shake it. If it rustles, it’s the real deal. 2) Multifunctional. It can carry hockey gear, bricks, and even water. 3) Throw it in the dirt. A true Frakta is simply rinsed off with a garden hose when dirty. 4) Price tag. Only $0.99.”
So, where can you buy this fancy Arena Extra-Large Shopper Tote Bag? Where else other than Barneys New York. You can also shop for a pair of $600 duck-taped sneakers here to go with the Ikea-like bag.
