This could end up being the most expensive divorce settlement world has ever seen. Russian oligarch Dmitry Rybolovlev aka “fertilizer king” is ordered to pay $4.5 billion to his ex-wife Elena Rybolovleva of Geneva. In addition to cash, the Geneva Tribunal of First Instance also awarded ex-wife Swiss properties worth $146 million, one in Gstaad and the other in tony neighborhood of Cologny in Geneva.
However, there’s a bit of a problem with ex-wife actually getting all those billions. Smart oligarch he is Mr. Rybolovlev, has transferred all his money from Swiss accounts to Cyprus-based trust funds way back in 2005. And, Switzerland has no legal aid agreement with Cyprus to bring that money back. On top of that his lawyers expect cash order to be watered down after appeals.
Couple both aged 47 has two daughters, one an adult Ekaterina. Custody of 13 year old daughter, Anna, also given to ex-wife. Dmitry Rybolovlev has made his fortune through potash mining. He has an estimated fortune of $8.8 billion and ranked 147th on the Forbes list of billionaires. At the time divorce proceedings started in 2008, he had a net worth of $12.8 billion and once ranked as the 79th richest person in the world.
Even if Elena Rybolovleva don’t get those billions we don’t have to worry about her finances. If not billions, she is sure to get millions in her settlement. Sometime ago we thought, another Russian oligarch, Chelsea FC owner Roman Abramovich’s divorce settlement might end up in billions, it was settled for just $300 million. By the way Mr. Rybolovlev also into football, he shares ownership of French cub AS Monaco FC with House of Grimaldi (his share 66.67%, royals 33.33%).
Elena Rybolovleva’s lawyer Marc Bonnant called the order “the most expensive divorce in history,” an amount un-heard of for Switzerland and for Russian oligarchs. We’ll eagerly follow this story and give a helping hand to ex-Mrs. Rybolovleva in case she needs extra assistance in counting all that money in near future.
